Stories are spreading to another app.
Facebook today announced that it’s adding Stories to its main app. The feature will work like it does on Instagram (which is owned by Facebook), in that Facebook Stories will let you share photos and videos that can be viewed by your friends for 24 hours. Facebook Stories will appear at the top of your News Feed.
Another feature new feature coming to Facebook is Direct. With Direct, you can share individual photos and videos with specific friends for a limited time. When you send a Direct photo or video, your friend will be able to view it once and then then replay it or reply to you. Once the conversation is over or the photo or video you’ve sent ends, it’ll no longer be available for viewing.
Finally, Facebook is adding camera effects to its main app. When you tap in the camera icon in the upper left corner of the Facebook app or swipe right from the News Feed, you can use the in-app camera that includes masks, frames, and interactive filters. Facebook is teaming up with several brands to create masks that’ll promote upcoming movies like Despicable Me 3 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
Stories are big in mobile apps right now, with Snapchat launching the feature some time ago to let its users share their days with their followers. Instagram launched a similar feature last year, and it works well enough. Now Facebook wants to try the feature with its larger FB audience, and so it’s rolling Stories out to all of the users of its Android and iOS apps. Whether or not it catches on with those users remains to be seen, but Facebook has certainly gotten quite a few movies onboard with its new feature at launch.
