Some iPhone 7 models on iOS 11.3 having microphone issues

iPhone 7 Plus hands-on review

If you've got an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus and you're having microphone issues, you're not alone.

Apple has acknowledged that some iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus models running iOS 11.3 or later may suffer from microphone problems. Specifically, these users may see a grayed out speaker button during phone calls, and the issue could prevent customers from being heard during phone calls and FaceTime video chats.

In the internal memo acquired by MacRumors, Apple Authorized Service Providers have been told to ask affected customers to disconnect Bluetooth headsets and other audio accessories to see if that fixes the issue. If the speaker button is still grayed out during a call, the service providers should run audio diagnostics.

Affected devices no longer under warranty may be given an exception. If you think your device is affected by these microphone problems, you should make an appointment at an Apple Authorized Service Provider or with the Genius Bar at an Apple Store.

This is a weird bug, affecting just the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus devices on iOS 11.3 or later. It's also a significant bug, though, because being unable to be heard during phone calls kind of breaks one of the main features of a phone. It's not known exactly what's causing this problem, but Apple says that affected devices may require a repair. Hopefully if that's the case, your device will be fixed free of charge.
