Oculus Go standalone VR headset launching today for $199

A new virtual reality headset has arrived.

Oculus Go is launching today in 23 countries. Priced at $199 for the 32GB model and $249 for the 64GB version, Oculus Go is a standalone VR headset that features a 5.5-inch 2560x1440 LCD screen, a Snapdragon 821 processor, spatial audio, and an integrated microphone. Oculus says that the headset's battery will last for around 2 hours of gaming or 2.5 hours of streaming media and video.

One other hardware detail about the Oculus Go that's worth mentioning is that Xiaomi has been named as a hardware partner for the device.

Included with the Oculus Go is a controller with a touch surface, trigger, and back and home buttons. The controller is powered by a AA battery.

On the software side, there are more than 1,000 apps available for Oculus Go at launch. This includes apps from the likes of Hulu and Netflix, games like Racket Fury Table Tennis VR and Hidden Temple VR Adventure, and more. Oculus also notes that the Oculus Go is binary-compatible with Gear VR for most apps, which is good news for its app selection.

Oculus has experience in the VR market, having released a high-end VR headset that requires a powerful computer to run. The Oculus Go is more of an entry-level model, and with its $199 starting price and the fact that it doesn't need a phone or computer to work, the Oculus Go could be a good first VR headset for a lot of people.

Oculus Go is now available from Oculus, Amazon, Best Buy, and Newegg. Are you interested in the Oculus Go?
