HP confirms that it will abandon Elite x3 plans

HP Elite x3 official

Remember the HP Elite x3? This high-end Windows phone was one of the last smartphones we saw running Microsoft’s mobile platform. We haven’t heard much about the Elite x3 lately, but that’s changing today, and it’s not good news.

HP has confirmed that it’s going to cease Elite x3 sales and support by the end of 2019. Nick Lazaridis, EMEA head for HP, has told The Register that this decision is a result of Microsoft’s “change in strategy”.

Here’s Lazaridis’s full statement:

"Microsoft, as all companies do, decided on a change in strategy and so they are less focused on what they thought they would be focused on today. he said.

"Given that, we also had decided that without Microsoft's drive and support there it doesn't make sense. If the software, if the operating system ecosystem isn't there then we are not an operating system company."

We haven’t seen much from Microsoft in the way of new Windows phone stuff, whether that’s software or hardware. It seems that the company may be throwing in the towel of its own mobile platform, and so it’s no surprise to hear that HP is planning to kill off any future plans it may have had for the Elite x3 and its ecosystem. The device is still available for purchase, though, so folks that are sticking with Windows on mobile can still snag an Elite x3 if they want a high-end piece of hardware.
