The same day that Xiaomi introduced its new Mi 6 flagship in China, Sharp has revealed a new Android flagship of its own in Japan.
The Sharp Aquos R is official, and it’s very much a flagship-tier device. It runs Android 7.1 Nougat on a 5.3-inch 2560x1440 display with 120Hz refresh rate and HDR. There’s a 22.6-megapixel rear camera on the Aquos R with a wide angle lens and optical image stabilization, a 16.3-megapixel front-facing camera with a wide angle lens, and a fingerprint reader.
Other hardware specs of the Aquos R include a Snapdragon 835 processor, 64GB of storage, 4GB of RAM, a 3160mAh battery, Quick Charge 3.0 support, and a USB Type-C port.
Sharp is also touting the Aquos R’s EMOP AI that’ll learn your habits and can also power a special charging base. When the Aquos R is in this charging base, the phone will look for you and turn to face you when you’re getting an incoming call or an alarm is going off.
Details on the Sharp Aquos R’s launch and pricing are still light, but because it was announced in Japan, it’ll likely be released there sometime soon, too.
The Sharp Aquos R — the “R” stands for Reality, Response, Robotics, and Reliability, by the way — looks like a nice phone, giving off a bit of a Pixel vibe but with a fingerprint reader on the front. Also nice is that it offers a Quad HD display in a smaller, sub-5.5-inch screen, which isn’t something that we see often. The special charging base that’ll look for you and turn to face you when you get a call or have an alarm going off sounds like it could be kind of creepy, but hey, it could be convenient, too.
