Verizon says that the launch of unlimited data helped to stem its customer losses in Q1 2017, but the new plan may have had another, more negative effect on Verizon.
During T-Mobile’s Q1 2017 earnings call yesterday, CEO John Legere claimed that Verizon’s network speeds have slowed by 14 percent since the big red carrier launched its unlimited data plan. A T-Mo spokesperson explained that T-Mobile got this data from Ookla’s Speed Test app, comparing the speeds of T-Mo and Verizon from January 1 through February 12 (pre-Verizon unlimited) and April 9 through April 15 (post-Verizon unlimited).
T-Mobile claims that during that same time, its network speeds have gotten faster. “And in the same time, the speeds on our network have grown 10 percent. So when we say there’s only one network built for unlimited, it’s clearly ours,” said T-Mobile CEO John Legere.
Legere loves to take shots at the competition, especially AT&T and Verizon, so it’s no surprise that he’s finding something else to give Verizon a hard time about. It’s unclear whether or not Legere’s ribbing will actually result in any customers changing carriers, but regardless of whether or not it does, you can be sure that this won’t be the last time that the T-Mobile CEO takes a shot at Verizon.
