Details on Galaxy Note 7 battery issues leak out ahead of Samsung's announcement

Samsung will officially reveal the findings of its investigation into the cause of the Galaxy Note 7 fires on Sunday, but before then, details of the report have leaked out.

As was previously rumored, it’s said that the batteries in the Galaxy Note 7 are the main cause of the overheating. It’s said that batteries from Samsung SDI Co. were irregularly sized and didn’t fit right inside the Note 7, which caused them to overheat. These are the batteries that were part of Samsung’s first Note 7 recall.

Samsung also sourced Note 7 batteries from Amperex Technology Ltd., who produced the batteries in China. These batteries are said to have had a manufacturing issue as a result of Amperex having to quickly ramp up production, as Samsung needed more batteries after recalling the phones with batteries from Samsung SDI Co.

Samsung is also still working to reclaim all of the Galaxy Note 7 phones that are still in use by customers. There have been updates released in countries around the world to disable the Note 7s that are still out there, and all four major US carriers have pushed such an update.

Some people have avoided the disabling update and continue to use the Note 7. Verizon recently said that it still has thousands of Note 7 users, and so it’s taking its efforts a step further by blocking those devices from making outgoing calls, except to 911 and Verizon customer service.
