Nokia and Xiaomi sign patent deal, will explore AR and VR collaboration opportunities

Two of the biggest names in mobile have struck a deal.

Nokia and Xiaomi have entered into a multi-year patent cross-licensing agreement. As part of the deal, the two companies gain access to each others cellular standard essential patents, and Xiaomi is acquiring patent assets from Nokia.

Additionally, Nokia and Xiaomi are entering into a business cooperation agreement that’ll see the two firms work together on several fronts. Nokia will provide infrastructure equipment and they’ll collaborate on optical transport solutions for datacenter interconnect, IP Routing, and a data center fabric solution.

Also part of this agreement is the plan for Nokia and Xiaomi to explore the chance to work together in the future on projects that include the Internet of Things, augmented reality, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence.

It’s always good to see patent licensing agreements rather than patent litigation, so this news of a deal between Nokia and Xiaomi is a welcome one. To read the Nokia’s full announcement, including quotes from Nokia and Xiaomi execs, hit the link below.
