Sprint and HTC are teaming up on a new 5G device.

Sprint today announced that it's working with HTC and Qualcomm on a new 5G mobile smart home hub. The device will use Qualcomm's Snapdragon mobile platform, including the Snapdragon X50 5G modem, and it'll support Gigabit LTE and 5G speeds.

This 5G mobile smart home hub will launch in the first half of 2019. Details on the product are pretty light, but Sprint says that it "will deliver multimedia and connedted data capabilities in a compact and portable design." Sprint CTO Dr. John Saw also touched on the device a bit, saying, "This innovative product will allow customers on the go, at work or at home to enjoy Sprint 5G on multiple devices with incredibly fast connectivity for content sharing, mobile gaming, entertainment and so much more."

Sprint plans to launch its mobile 5G network in the first half of 2019. Some of the cities that'll get it first include Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, New York City, Phoenix, and Washington D.C.

It sounds like Sprint and HTC may be working on some sort of 5G mobile hotspot. Such a device would allow customers to experience Sprint's new 5G network and spread the connection to multiple devices without having to commit to a 5G smartphone. Early 4G smartphones were bulky and had their batteries drain quickly, so for customers that are concerned that the same could happen with early 5G phones, a mobile hotspot could be a good option.
