Google's Project Fi is currently only available on select devices, including Pixel phones and select devices sold in the Project Fi store. Soon, though, it may expand to many more products.
Project Fi will soon let you bring phones from Samsung, LG, Motorola, OnePlus, and even Apple iPhones in beta. That's according to a blog post from BGR that was posted earlier today and then quickly deleted, suggesting that an embargo may have been broken.
Details on Google's plans are light because the official announcement hasn't been made yet, but it's said that these devices that customers bring may not get the "full Google Fi experience" that's designed for the phones that they sell. This means that you may not get features like fast network switching between T-Mobile, Sprint, and Wi-Fi or the enhanced network features that Google recently rolled out.
Support for bringing phones from Samsung, OnePlus, Apple, and others onto Project Fi would be a huge addition to Google's mobile service. While there are some nice devices sold by Fi, there are some very popular phones that are missing, like the Galaxy S9, OnePlus 6T, and all of Apple's iPhones. If customers are able to bring these phones onto Fi, it could help convince a lot of people to give Fi a try. We'll have to wait and see exactly what the restrictions are on these BYOD phones before we get too excited, though.
