There’s been a lot of talk about 5G lately, and today T-Mobile chimed in with its plans to build out a true 5G wireless network.
T-Mobile will begin deploying its 5G network in 2019. The magenta carrier is aiming to have a full nationwide 5G rollout in 2020. And while that’s still a ways off, T-Mo does have a plan for it.
T-Mobile plans to use some of the 600MHz spectrum that it recently bought for its 5G rollout. In addition to these 600MHz airwaves, T-Mo has 200MHz of spectrum in the 28/39GHz bands that covers nearly 100 million people in major metro areas, as well as “an impressive volume” of mid-band spectrum. The goal with T-Mobile’s plan is to offer 5G on several types of spectrum so that it can offer good reach as well as the high-speed that customers expect from 5G.
Both Ericsson and Nokia have committed to working with T-Mobile on its 600MHz 5G deployment. There are still standards to be set and equipment to be built, but T-Mobile wants its customers and the rest of the wireless industry to know that it’s got a plan for a true 5G nationwide network and that while it’ll take some time to get there, it’s coming.
