Sony’s got a wide range of Xperia devices, but it looks like the company is planning to kill off one category of its Android phones.
Sony will stop selling “Premium Standard” models of Xperia smartphones, according to Sony Investor Day presentation slides obtained by XperiaBlog. The reason for this decision is that these devices did not sell as well as Sony wanted, with the company only selling 31 percent of its unit sales target for that category.
The devices that belong in the Premium Standard category include the Xperia X (pictured above) and Xperia X Compact. That means that it’s unlikely that we’ll see follow-ups to these phones, which launched last year.
As their placement Premium Standard category suggests, the Xperia X and Xperia X Compact are upper mid-range devices with features like 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and Snapdragon 600-series processors. While they look like respectable mid-range devices on their own, Sony offers other mid-range phones that aren’t quite as high-end as the Premium Standard phones, but are more affordable and likely a better fit for what mid-range shoppers are looking for.
