Nokia 8.1 official with 6.18-inch display and Android 9 Pie

HMD Global's family of Nokia-branded Android One phones is growing again.

The Nokia 8.1 was announced today as a new "value flagship" smartphone. It's got a 6.18-inch Full HD+ display with HDR10 and a notch up top that houses an adaptive 20MP camera. Around back there's a dual rear camera setup with a main 12MP shooter with optical image stabilization as well as a secondary 13MP depth-sensing camera that'll help you capture portrait "bokeh" shots. Also included is a Pro Camera mode to give you more control when capturing images.

Inside the new Nokia phone is a Snapdragon 710 processor paired with 4GB of RAM. HMD Global has included 64GB of built-in storage, but there's also a microSD card slot that'll let you add up to 400GB of additional storage. There's a 3500mAh battery included as well, and all of those features are packed into a body with a 6000-series aluminum frame for a more premium feel.

Other notable features of the Nokia 8.1 include a rear fingerprint reader, a USB-C port for charging, 18W fast charging support, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

On the software side, the Nokia 8.1 is the first Nokia-branded phone to come preloaded with Android 9 Pie. It's an Android One phone, which means that it includes features like Digital Wellbeing to help you understand how you're using your phone. Being an Android One phone also means that the Nokia 8.1 will get three years of monthly security patches and two major Android OS updates.

The Nokia 8.1 will launch in mid-December at a price of €399 ($453 USD). It'll be available in Blue/Silver, Steel/Copper, and Iron/Steel color options.

With specs like a 6.18-inch display, dual rear cameras, 4GB of RAM, and a Snapdragon 710 processor, the Nokia 8.1 looks like a solid upper mid-range smartphone. Perhaps the most attractive part is its Android One software, though. Not only do you get Android 9 Pie, which many flagship phones don't yet have, but you're also guaranteed years of monthly security updates as well as the next two Android OS upgrades, meaning you don't need to worry about your phone's software being out-of-date.
