Hot on the heels of a report about Google's Android P update, details on Apple's future update plans have also leaked.
Apple is now focusing on the next two years of updates, says a report from Bloomberg, with engineers able to delay features for a year if they're not ready for that year's major update. The goal is to improve the quality of iOS updates instead of working to create a huge list of new features each year.
The first major update to be part of this new strategy of Apple's will be iOS 12. Codenamed "Peace", the update will reportedly allow a third-party app to work across iPhones, iPads, and Macs. An upcoming macOS 10.14 update (codenamed "Liberty") will help with this effort and could include bringing some of Apple's iPhone apps to the Mac.
Animojis are also expected to expand with iOS 12, coming to the iPad and FaceTime video calls. Apple is allegedly working to include updated versions of its Stocks app and the Do Not Disturb feature with iOS 12, as well as deeper Siri integration into the iPhone's search, a redesigned UI for importing photos onto the iPad, and support for letting several people play an augmented reality game at once.
Meanwhile, 2019 will reportedly bring with it new iPad features. These include the ability to run several windows in a single app and click between them like a web browser's tabs and the ability to run two instances of the same app side-by-side.
Apple has caught a lot of flak in recent months for several iOS 11 bugs that've been discovered, including one that'd cause the letter "i" to autocorrect to A[?], one that would cause your Messages app to freeze, and another that would've caused iOS to repeatedly crash on a certain date. These are issues for a company typically known for solid software, and it can put off people from updating the software on their phones, which can then lead to security issues. Here's to hoping Apple follows through on its focus to improve software quality.
