After testing 280-character tweets for the past month and a half, Twitter is now ready to roll 'em out worldwide.
Twitter is now extending the 280-character tweet limit to all users, save for those that use a few specific languages. Those are Japanese, Korean, and Chinese, and Twitter says that they're sticking to 140-character tweets "because cramming is not an issue in those languages."
This change isn't appearing for us on the web or in Twitter's mobile apps quite yet, but that should change soon.
Twitter also shared some of the things that it learned during its test of the 280-character limit. For example, the company says that it was concerned that users would just fill timelines with long tweets because they could, but that that wasn't the case. While there were many 280-character tweets in the first few days of the test, only 5 percent of tweets sent after that were longer than 140 characters, and only 2 percent were more than 190 characters.
