We're seeing more and more smartphones come to market without 3.5mm headphone jacks, and while some people don't mind this trend and are happy to use adapters or Bluetooth headphones, the lack of a 3.5mm jack is a deal breaker to others. The new Razer Phone is one of the devices that has ditched the 3.5mm jack, and Razer's CEO recently tried to explain why his company made that move.
Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan says that by not having a 3.5mm headphone jack, Razer was able to make the Razer Phone's battery approximately 500mAh larger. The Razer Phone comes with a 4,000mAh battery.
Tan adds that ditching the 3.5mm headphone jack allowed Razer to improve the phones thermals for better performance.
Finally, Razer was able to include a 24-bit THX-certified DAC adapter with every Razer Phone, which Tan says "sealed" the decision to abandon the 3.5mm jack. That "basically means we give even better quality headphone audio for those who want to hold on to their existing analog headphones", Tan explained.
Many companies that do ditch the 3.5mm jack on their smartphones include an adapter with every unit, and it's good to see Razer do the same. Some don't care for adapters, though, saying that they're small and easy to lose.
