Samsung Galaxy A8s official, features hole punch in its 6.4-inch display

Samsung Galaxy A8s Infinity-O hole punch display

One month after teasing its new Infinity-O display with a hole punch front camera, Samsung has introduced the first device using that display technology.

The Samsung Galaxy A8s is now official, and it features a round cutout in the upper left corner of its 6.4-inch 2340x1080 display. The camera is a 24MP snapper. Around back there are three more cameras, with the triple shooter setup offering a 24MP main camera, a 10MP telephoto with 2x optical zoom, and a 5MP depth-sensing camera.

Inside the Galaxy A8s is a Snapdragon 710 processor with either 6GB or 8GB of RAM. There's 128GB of built-in storage along with a microSD card slot in case you need more storage, and Samsung has also included a rear fingerprint reader.

Samsung will launch the Galaxy A8s in China later this month, but there's no word yet on how much it might cost.

After seeing so many smartphones released throughout 2018 with a notch at the top of their displays, the Galaxy A8s and its hole punch cutout is an interesting change of pace. Rather than having something dip down from the top bezel and cut into the screen, the hole punch lets device makers move the front camera off to the side while getting the extra screen that a notch would provide. It could be a bit less distracting that a notch for some people, and I wouldn't be surprised if we saw many more phones with a hole punch in 2019.

What do you think of the Galaxy A8s and its hole punch display?
