OnePlus shared some exciting news yesterday, saying that it'll have one of the first 5G phones in Europe next year. Now, though, the company has revealed some less-than-exciting news about its 5G hardware.
OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has said that he expects OnePlus's 5G smartphone to cost $200 to $300 more than the typical OnePlus phone. "It’s hard to know because there’s a lot of specifics still to look at, but it’s likely in the neighborhood of $200-300 more," Lau told The Verge. For reference, the OnePlus 6T starts at $549.
While Lau is only speaking for OnePlus, it wouldn't be a surprise to see the initial batch of 5G smartphones come with a price premium. Smartphones that include new tech typically aren't cheap, and that's one of the trade-offs that you make being an early adopter. What will be interesting is seeing exactly how much of a premium the first 5G smartphones command and whether or not carriers will charge more for connecting their 5G networks.
Lau went on to talk a bit more about 5G smartphones and how they'll be different than the 4G phones we've got now. For example, the OnePlus CEO anticipates that it'll be difficult to have a device that works on many carriers around the world.
He also expects that millimeter wave (mmWave), the spectrum that many will use for 5G networks, will make it difficult to make good-looking devices. "It appears impossible to make a nice-looking flagship device, for now," Lau explained.
