Metro by T-Mobile now lets customers avoid $15 device change fee

Earlier this week, it was discovered that Metro by T-Mobile had begun charging a $15 plus tax fee every time a customer wanted to change their device. Fast-forward a couple of days, though, and it looks like Metro has backed down from that policy.

Metro by T-Mobile now offers customers a way to change their device free of charge. "All current Metro customers can now complete a device (IMEI) change free of charge by calling 611, *228 or 888-8metro8 and using our automated system," the prepaid provider told TmoNews.

On Metro by T-Mobile, your SIM card is linked to your device's IMEI, so you have to contact Metro if you want to switch devices. The carrier previously charged a $15 fee to do so, but customers were able to avoid the fee if they contacted customer support. Metro deciding to enforce the fee on every device change caused an uproar, and now it looks like the decision has been reversed.

Getting charged $15 plus tax to change your device isn't cheap, even if you're not the type of person to swap devices regularly. That's why it's good to see Metro by T-Mobile decide to waive the device change fee for customers who opt to do so through automated support.
