Google confirms Allo is shutting down

Google Allo Android app

Following rumors that claimed that Google will soon shut down its Allo messaging service, the company today confirmed the news.

Google Allo "will continue to work through March 2019", said Google in a new blog post. The company says that it's decided to stop supporting Allo and focus on Messages due to the "continued momentum" of the Messages app.

Allo users will be able to export all of their conversation history from the app before the shutdown. You can find the instructions on how to do so right here.

Google also gave an update on some of its other messaging services. The Duo video calling app "is seeing strong growth and engagement across both Android and iOS", says Google. It added that its Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet services will be made available for regular Hangouts users "at some point", following recent rumors that said that the consumer version of Hangouts would soon be shut down. Hangouts Chat and Meet are currently focused on G Suite customers.

So there are Google's messaging plans, for the near term at least. Allo will soon be shut down, which isn't a huge surprise given how little we've heard about it recently with regard to new feature or anything like that. Messages will be there for chatting and Duo will offer video calling, and eventually Hangouts users will be transitioned to Hangouts Chat and Meet. Until then, though, you Hangouts fans can keep using the service that you like.

Which of these Google chat services do you use?
