Google Allo will reportedly be shut down

Google Allo

It feels like it's been awhile since we've heard any news about Google's Allo messaging app, and now we may know why that is.

Google will soon announce that it's shutting down Allo, according to a source speaking to 9to5Google. It's unclear when the announcement might be made, but there's speculation that Google may be holding off on revealing the news following the brouhaha about Hangouts and its possible shutdown.

Today's report also claims that "essentially the entire Allo team" has been moved to Android Messages and has been working on porting most of Allo's features to Messages. Google hasn't said much about Allo recently, but the company did say back in April that it was "pausing" development on Allo.

While still unofficial, it wouldn't be a huge surprise to see Allo be shut down. Google launched Allo in late 2016 and added several features to the app in the following months, including chat backup and a web version. Google has gone quiet with regard to Allo recently, though, focusing its efforts on Android Messages instead. It seems like Google is going all-in with Messages, and so it'd make sense for Google to divert its resources and users from Allo into Messages.
