Xiaomi's Black Shark gaming phone official with Snapdragon 845, up to 8GB of RAM

Xiaomi Black Shark gaming phone official

Last year, Razer entered the smartphone market with a gaming-centric smartphone that offered high-end specs and an aggressive design. Now another company is trying its hand at a gaming phone.

Xiaomi's Black Shark smartphone is now official. It's got a black and green color scheme similar to the Razer Phone, complete with a green logo on its backside, but doesn't have the same sharp corners as Razer's handset.

As you might expect from a gaming-focused smartphone, the Black Shark is well-specced. It's got a Snapdragon 845 processor and either 6GB of RAM with 64GB of storage or 8GB of RAM paired with 128GB of storage. Also included is a large 5.99-inch 2160x1080 display with an 18:9 aspect ratio and a 4,000mAh battery with fast charging support.

The Black Shark is touted as including "liquid cooling" tech to help keep your phone cool during intense gaming sessions,  but there aren't many details on exactly what that feature entails. There's also an optional gamepad accessory with an analog stick and its own 340mAh battery.

Getting back to the Black Shark itself, the phone has a dual rear camera setup with 12MP and 20 MP cameras with f/1.75 aperture and dual LED flash as well as a 20MP front camera with f/2.2 aperture. There's a USB-C port for charging and listening to audio (no 3.5mm jack here), a fingerprint reader, and dual SIM slots, too.

The Black Shark will be offered in China starting at 2999 yuan ($477 USD) for the 6GB/64GB model and going up to 3499 yuan ($557 USD) for the 8GB/128GB model. There's no word yet on when or if the phone might launch in other parts of the globe.

With a Snapdragon 845, up to 8GB of RAM, and a large screen, the Black Shark looks like it ought to be a nice option for anyone whose main focus is gaming on the go. That's especially true given its price compared to other Snapdragon 845-equipped phones.

What do you think of the Black Shark? Would you buy one if it were available in your country?
