T-Mobile is targeting television in its next Un-carrier move

T-Mobile Un-carrier

T-Mobile announced today that it’s targeting your TV in it’s next un-carrier move. T-Mobile announced that they’ve acquired Layer3 TV, and together will release a “disruptive TV service” sometime in 2018.

It’s interesting to see T-Mobile shift its focus for this un-carrier announcement from mobile to TV, but as T-Mobile CEO John Legere points out, people are consuming media on their mobile more often than not these days. In this golden age of "cord cutting", now seems like an excellent time to invest in a streaming platform, and T-Mobile’s partnership with Layer3 TV could make for a promising partnership between T-Mobile’s massive influence and Layer3 TV’s expertise on the matter.

But will it be good enough to compete with the multitude of alternatives already out there?

There weren’t a whole lot of details given in the announcement. What exactly does “disruptive TV service” mean? Will T-Mobile’s other Un-carrier moves, like Binge On and taxes and fees included, also be a part of it? Will it be optional or will it be an inclusive part of a future T-Mobile One plan? Many questions are left unanswered, but at the very least we catch a glimpse of what a Layer3 TV and T-Mobile partnership might bring.

Layer3 TV is only available in a select few markets, but it appears to be an alternative to traditional TV with cheaper prices. Layer3 TV currently offers 275+ allHD channels, DVR, and 25,000 on demand titles. Prices vary depending on what channels you want, just like traditional cable, but appears to cost a little less than some services offer. Still, it’s pretty expensive if you’re like many cord cutters who have reduced themselves to one or two streaming services per month.

We'll have to wait to find out the complete details of this particular un-carrier move, but it will be interesting to see what will come of this surprise partnership.
