Google says Android's 'Check for update' is broken, but it'll be fixed in 2018

Google Pixel 2 XL hands-on video

Remember back in September when Google said that pressing the "Check for update" button on your Nexus or Pixel would begin actually getting you an update if there was one available? Today we got an update on that feature, and it turns out that the feature was short-lived.

Googler Elliott Hughes says that a Google Play Services update broke the feature that would allow users to press "Check for update" and get an update. Specifically, it was an API incompatibility between the System Update code and the Checkin code.

This bug has been fixed inside of Google, but it won't be until 2018 that it works again for those of us outside of Google.

It can be frustrating when you know that there's an update available for your phone and you press the "Check for update" button on your device only to be told that there's no update available. This feature was supposed to flag your device's check as user-initiated and let you skip the usual rollout limitations of a new update. Hughes says that this feature worked briefly but was then broken by a Play Services update.

Here's to hoping that this "Check for update" feature begins working early next year.
