The rumors were true: Apple is buying Shazam.

Apple confirmed today that it has bought Shazam, the popular music recognition app. "We are thrilled that Shazam and it's talented team will be joining Apple," company spokesperson Tom Neumayr told BuzzFeed News

Neumayr continued, saying that "Apple Music and Shazam are a natural fit, sharing a passion for music discovery and delivering great music experiences to our users. We have exciting plans in store, and we look forward to combining with Shazam upon approval of today’s agreement."

Neither Apple nor Shazam have revealed how much Apple paid for the music recognition app. Rumors from last week suggested that Apple would pony up around $400 million for Shazam, though.

Shazam is one of the best-known names when it comes to music recognition on mobile devices. While Apple hasn't said why it purchased Shazam or what it plans to do with the app, the company could more deeply integrate Shazam into iOS (Siri already uses Shazam to recognize music). It remains to be seen what, if any, effect Apple's purchase will have on the Shazam app that's available on other platforms.
