T-Mobile adding high-speed data limit to Mobile Without Borders next month

Heads up, T-Mobile customers, because there’s a policy change coming soon that you should be aware of.

T-Mobile has revealed that starting November 12th, 2017, customers will have up to 5GB of high-speed data usage while in Mexico and Canada. This applies to customers on T-Mobile One, Simple Choice North America, and legacy plans with the qualifying feature.

Once you use 5GB of high-speed data in one month in Mexico or Canada, you’ll have unlimited data at 128Kbps, or 256Kbps if you’re on T-Mobile One Plus.

T-Mobile’s Mobile Without Borders feature originally launched in mid-2015, letting customers use their talk, text, and data in Mexico and Canada just as they do in the U.S. This meant that customers with higher high-speed data allotments, like 10GB or unlimited, could use all of that data in Mexico or Canada. That’ll no longer be the case starting November 12th.

As for why it’s making this change, T-Mobile explains that it wants to “prevent usage beyond the intent of the product.” The carrier says that less than 1 percent of people with this feature travel to Mexico and Canada and use more than 5GB of data in a month.

While T-Mobile says that there aren’t many people who will be affected by this change, it’s still kind of a bummer. With Mobile Without Borders, you know exactly how much high-speed data you can use in Mexico or Canada without making any changes or worrying about a roaming allotment. Starting next month, that’ll change for some customers.
