Amazon's new Kindle Oasis features a bigger display and a waterproof body

Amazon today introduced a new Kindle e-reader, and it adds a new feature that’s been one of the most oft-requested additions to the Kindle family.

The new Kindle Oasis is now official, and it’s the first Amazon Kindle with a waterproof body. The device is IPX8-rated, which means that it’s able to withstand submersion up to two meters of fresh water for up to 60 minutes.

The addition of a waterproof body is huge for the Kindle Oasis. Lots of people like to read with their Kindle in the tub or by the pool, and with this new Kindle Oasis, they can now do so without worrying about getting their device wet. Here’s to hoping that waterproofing comes to the rest of the Kindle family soon.

This new Kindle Oasis also features a larger display than its predecessor — 7 inches versus 6 inches — though the resolution still comes out to 300 ppi. Another upgrade to this new Kindle Oasis display is the LED count, with the new model packing a couple more LEDs for more uniform lighting.

Also new to this Kindle Oasis model is an aluminum back, which should give it a more premium feel than previous Kindle devices that had a plastic back.

Other features of the new Kindle Oasis include 8GB and 32GB storage options, Audible support, a touchscreen and page turn buttons, and models with Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi + free cellular connectivity.

One other detail worth noting is that the new Kindle Oasis doesn’t rely on a cover for extended battery life like the previous version. Amazon says that the new Kindle Oasis offers weeks of battery life on a single charge and that it supports fast charging to get you from 0 percent to 100 percent charge in less than two hours.

The new Kindle Oasis is now available for pre-order, and it’ll begin shipping on October 31st.

This is definitely a premium Kindle, but the upgrades included with the new Kindle Oasis could actually make it a worthy purchase for voracious readers. The larger display fits more than 30 percent more words on a page than the previous Oasis, and the waterproofing will let you read in more places without worry of hurting your pricey e-reader.

What do you think of the new Kindle Oasis?
