Motorola adds Moto G4 Plus to Android Oreo update plans

Moto G4 Plus

Last week, Motorola revealed the list of devices that it would update to Android Oreo. There was a bit of an uproar following that announcement, as some Reddit users found that Motorola had previously promised an Android O update for the Moto G4 Plus, but that device was missing from Moto’s list. Now Motorola has responded to the controversy.

Motorola says that it now plans to upgrade the Moto G4 Plus to Android Oreo. According to the company, its general practice is to update Moto G phones to get one major OS update, which the Moto G4 Plus got with Android Nougat. Because of the “errors” in its marketing materials, though, the G4 Plus will get both the N and O updates.

Moto says that it’ll take some time to fit the Moto G4 Plus’s Android Oreo update into its schedule since it’s an “unplanned upgrade,” so it could be awhile before the G4 Plus actually gets its taste of Oreo.

Here’s Motorola’s full statement on this matter:

“Since the time of posting this, we have learned of some errors in our marketing materials around Android O upgrades for moto g4 Plus. It’s our general practice for the moto g family to get one major OS upgrade per device, so it wasn’t originally planned for Android O. But it’s important to us we keep our promises, so in addition to the N upgrade it has already received, we will be upgrading moto g4 Plus to Android O. Because this is an unplanned upgrade, it will take some time to fit into our schedule, we’ll update our software upgrade page when we have more info.”

The promise of upgrades to both Android Nougat and Oreo could have pushed some consumers to purchase a Moto G4 Plus, so it’s good to see Motorola follow through with the upgrades, even if the promise was an “error”. Unfortunately, it doesn’t sound like the standard Moto G4 or Moto G4 Play will be quite as lucky.

It’s also worth noting that Motorola revealed today that its “general practice” is to give Moto G phones one major OS upgrade. So if OS updates are important to you, this is something to keep in my if you ever find yourself considering a Moto G phone in the future.
