Google will delete backups of inactive Android phones after two months

If you’re an Android user and you keep multiple devices around, then there’s something you may want to know about backups.

Google deletes backups for your Android devices if they go unused for two months. That fact was recently brought up by Reddit user Tanglebrook, who looked in their Google Drive recently only to find that the backup of their Nexus 6P that they recently returned was no longer there.

Google Drive support pages confirm that “your backup will remain active as long as you use your device.” If you don’t use a device for two weeks, Google may give you a warning on your backup that’ll say something like “Expires in 54 days.”

To check your backups, go to Google Drive, tap Menu, and tap Backups.

While many folks probably wouldn’t need the backup of a device two months after they stop using it, it’s still kind of disappointing that Google just deletes backups without warning after a couple of months. Some users may have important data in those backups that aren’t stored elsewhere, so it’d be nice if Google at least gave an email notification before deleting a backup, especially for users that are paying for Google Drive storage.
