Essential Phone team talks Android Oreo update, Verizon certification, and more

Essential Phone hands-on review

Now that the Essential Phone is shipping out to buyers and hitting Sprint store shelves, the Essential team took a little time to jump on Reddit and answer some questions in an AMA (Ask Me Anything).

Probably one of the biggest questions on the minds of Essential Phone owners is when Android 8.0 Oreo will come to their device. The good news is that the wait won’t be long, as Essential says that an Android O update will arrive “in the next month or two.”

Essential also touched a bit on 3.5mm headphone jacks. The team says that headphone jacks are “pretty big components” that don’t play well with edge-to-edge screen designs like the Essential Phone. If the company were to include a 3.5mm jack in the Essential Phone, it says it would’ve had to make compromises that it wasn’t comfortable with, like putting a large chin on the phone, reducing battery size, or adding a headphone bump.

The company does say that it’s working on a high-end audio accessory using the Essential Phone’s Click Connectors. This accessory will include a 3.5mm headphone jack. Before that one is released, though, Essential says that a charging dock will be released.

Essential Phone Pure White

Essential says that it’s cooking up more color options for the Essential Phone. Currently only Moon Black is available, and the company promises that the Pure White version is in build trials now and that it’ll be “a few weeks” before those units are in boxes and shipping.

Another topic that was touched on in this Reddit AMA was Verizon. Specifically, Essential says that its phone is at the “tail end” of Verizon’s certification process, which it needs to complete to work with advanced Verizon network features like VoLTE. This certification could come as soon as tomorrow, Essential says.

Essential also mentioned that a European release for the Essential Phone is a priority and that tooling for the EU plug for the phone’s power adapter is in development.

Overall this was a really informative AMA, and it’s great to see the Essential team answer so many questions. There’s a lot of excitement surrounding the Essential Phone but a lot of questions as well, which makes sense considering that it’s the first phone from a new company. There are even more interesting tidbits to be found in the full Reddit AMA, so hit the link below to check it out for yourself.
