This month, Apple announced a lot of devices. We have three new iPhones, a new Apple TV, and the company even announced a brand new smartwatch that has two distinct variants: One with LTE and one without. While on stage debuting the new Apple Watch, the company talked about how popular the smartwatch is, saying that it's raking in the attention in the wearables market.
Which certainly makes sense. The Apple Watch, with its distinct design, easy enough user interface, and its focus on health and fitness, it's an all-around device that doesn't necessarily aim to break the bank, either (even if it's one of the more expensive options out there, and has even higher-priced luxury options).
The Apple Watch checks off quite a few boxes in the features department, and now it has one more to mark off.
Rumor had it that Apple would announce a cellular-connected smartwatch this year, and that's indeed what happened. During a demo, Apple showed off making a call from the Steve Jobs Theater to another executive standing in the middle of a lake, trying to stay balanced on a paddle board. The call itself, even from the middle of a lake, was pretty crisp and clear, and Apple reinforced the fact that the person on the board was using a microphone on the Apple Watch -- not a wireless headset or anything like that.
The demo was effective. The Apple Watch Series 3 really did make for a solid phone call, even when the watch wasn't anywhere near the user's mouth. I don't have any doubt that anyone who picks up a Series 3 with LTE will be pretty happy with its abilities.
And then there's the battery life. Soon after the event wrapped up it was confirmed that talk time for the Apple Watch Series 3 with LTE is only one hour. That's not a lot of time, and I wouldn't blame anyone if they weren't too excited about that fact. However, I can also say that one hour worth of talk time, for a smartwatch, is probably good enough. I know it would be for me, who, if I can help it, talks about an hour on the phone in total over a full month.
Having a quick conversation via the watch, without having to be tied to your smartphone, is a cool feature that other smartwatches have done in the past, and it's good to see that Apple is doing the same thing with the Apple Watch. Battery life in general, without talk time, doesn't seem to be impacted too much, which is a good thing.
I should also add in here, real quick, that I'm actually a little surprised Apple priced the Series 3 at what it did. They could've gouged people for the added "luxury" of built-in cellular connectivity, but they didn't. Thankfully.
