BlackBerry Priv won't get an Android Nougat update

BlackBerry Priv hands-on video

The BlackBerry KEYone is the new BlackBerry Android hotness, but some BlackBerry fans may still be carrying 2015's Priv. Unfortunately for them, there’s some bad news regarding the Priv and Android updates.

Alex Thurber, BlackBerry Mobility Solutions General Manager, has confirmed that the BlackBerry Priv will not receive an update to Android 7.0 Nougat. The Priv launched in late 2015 with Android 5.1.1 Lollipop and was updated to Android 6.0 Marshmallow in 2016.

As for why the Priv won’t be updated, Thurber explained that the amount of work necessary to get all of the partners together to release a Nougat update would be near impossible.

When it comes to the full-touch DTEK devices, Thurber was less clear, but he did said that they were TCL reference designs to see if licensing the BlackBerry name made sense. Because of that, some folks don’t expect the DTEK models to be updated.

BlackBerry has said that the KEYone will be updated to Android 8.0 Oreo.

It’s always disappointing when news comes out that a major phone release will no longer receive any major OS updates. The Priv was notable because it was BlackBerry’s first Android smartphone and because it was a high-end device for its time. However, it doesn’t seem like the Priv got much traction with consumers, and so it’s difficult for BlackBerry to put in the resources to get a Nougat update for the Priv.
