Google Home voice calling now rolling out in U.S. and Canada

A few months ago at its I/O developer conference, Google revealed that it’d be bringing voice calling support to Google Home. Fast-forward to today and that feature is ready to roll.

Google says that hands-free voice calling with Google Home is rolling out and that folks in the U.S. and Canada will be able to use it starting today. With the feature, you can say “Hey Google, call ________” to have your Assistant start a free voice call.

Calls made with Google Home are free and use your Wi-Fi connection. To start, the recipient of your call will see “Unknown” or “No Caller ID” when you’re calling them with your Google Home, but Google says that it plans to make it possible to have your phone number displayed by the end of this year. Google Voice and Project Fi users can have their number displayed by going into there Assistant settings in the Google Home app.

Free voice calling is a big addition to Google Home. With it, you can conduct hands-free voice calls even if your phone isn’t nearby. So if your phone is charging in the other room and you need to call up a friend, or if you’ve misplaced your phone and want to make it ring so that you can locate it, Google Home can help.
